The main objectives of Navodaya Vidyalayas are:
1.     To provide good quality, modern education including a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of the environment, adventurous activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from the rural areas, without regard to their family’s socio-economic condition.
2.     To ensure that all the students of Navodaya Vidyalayas attain  a level of competence in three languages as envisaged in three language formula.
3.     To serve, in each District as focal point for improvement in the quality of school education in general, through sharing of experiences and facilities.
1.     Good quality modern education for talented children predominantly from rural areas with 75% reservation and 25% for Urban students.
2.     Reservation of seats for SC/ST category students is in proportion to their population in the district subject to the national minimum.
3.     Reservation of seats for girls is 33%.
4.     Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential starting from VI to XII.
5.     JNVs are usually located in rural areas.
6.     Free education including boarding and lodging, Uniforms, Text books and other stationary is provided to JNV students.
7.     Navodaya Vidyalayas are affiliated to CBSE. The students of X and XII write the board examinations (CBSE) and the students of other classes are assessed internally with C.C.E i.e. continuous comprehensive evaluation.
8.     Admission in Class-VI is made only through objective type test designed by NCERT and lateral entries are also made against vacancies in IX and XI.
9.     Learning three languages is compulsory.
10.30% of students in class IX from a vidyalaya located in our linguistic area spend one academic year in a vidyalaya in a different linguistic region to promote national integration through understanding of the  diversity and plurality of country’s cultures and people.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Tumkur was established in 1988 and it is located at Gollahalli, 11 Kms away from Tumkur town at the South east end of Devarayanadurga forest. The school is provided with a very good transportation facility as the buses ply from Tumkur to Doddaballapur and vice versa right infront of the vidyalaya. More than 500 people consisting of the students, staff and families reside on the campus. The place is provided with a large growth of vegetation and it is a feast for the eyes of the nature lovers.
